"A fantastic way of engaging children in learning about the Protective Behaviours Process, you could hear a pin drop!” Fiona Benjamin (Protective Behaviours Trainer for Hertfordshire)

Whale Tales is an event which helps children in years 4 & 5 understand and apply Protective Behaviours. The day involves the team from Bridge Builders engaging with the children in small groups through: story telling, puppetry, crafts, games and discussion times. The children also take home a booklet and materials to remind them of their adventure and to share with their parents and carers.

More than 200 pupils are taking part in Whale Tales during the school year 10/11. This is what some of the children thought:

“It’s helped me to do the right thing, not the wrong thing. Stop, think, act.”

“It’s helped me with the control of my anger.”

“It was the best school day ever.”

“I have learned that you have a choice for what you do.”

“I liked the story, thank you. You should do this more often.”

And that’s our plan!

Our full day’s programme, delivers the teaching in a dynamic way to the whole class, which also enables classroom staff to participate and observe their children.

Self awareness, managing feelings and empathy are some of the key aspects of learning within PHSCE and would be covered during the day in the Whale Tales programme. Protective Behaviours is a proven and effective way to help children understand why they may feel the way they do and provides them with strategies to cope with what life may throw at them in a safe way.

We are asking schools to pay part of the total cost; this will be £195 for each class of 30 children. As a charity we seek additional funding. As a school if you are able to help attract other funding please let us know.

We are also grateful to County Councillor Phil Bibby's support of this project. A £500 grant from his locality fund will enable us to purchase new display boards and a carrying case to replace the well worn set that we have been using.

Contact us if you would like to find out more about booking a Whale Tales for your year 5 class.
