The Adventure Journey

For Year 6

The Adventure Journey’s aim is for every child to hear about events in the Bible after Jesus’s death and resurrection, and to be encouraged to consider, question and explore the key questions: “How do Christian beliefs affect the way Christians live their lives”, “Why was the Bible written so long ago and is it still relevant?” and “what is the difference between meditation and prayer?”

During the Adventure Journey the children will have an opportunity to hear accounts from the book of Acts and will have time to reflect on how these Bible stories might help them in their lives today. They will learn about Pentecost and about the life of St Paul, and hear from modern Christians about the impact St Paul’s writing still has. Children will be given time to think about what their beliefs and values are and to explore any worries they have about their transition to secondary school.

The Adventure Journey is completed in the classroom and led by a teacher. There are three film clips for the class to watch. At the beginning of The Adventure Journey pupils will be given a notebook which has activities for them to complete after each video. At the end of the journey this notebook can be taken home to help the children remember what they have learnt and thought about. The whole journey takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. It is designed to be completed as one workshop session but could be split into three sessions of 30 minutes if preferred.

A resources pack will be delivered to schools just after the summer half term break. Links to the film clips will be emailed to schools the same week. Schools will need to provide each child with writing materials, colouring pencils, scissors and access to a glue stick and/or cellotape. The resources pack includes:

Beliefs and practices – Children explore how Christian beliefs affect the way Christians live their lives and deal with difficult times or worries. They learn about how the festival of Pentecost is celebrated in different communities.
Sources of wisdom – Children investigate, interpret and respond to the story of Pentecost and Paul’s life as described in the Bible.
Symbols and actions – Children consider how are light and candles are symbolic, particularly in the context of the celebration of Pentecost.
Prayer, worship and reflection – Pupils find out about prayer, reflection and meditation in Christianity. They explore if the practice of meditation is the same as praying.
Identity and belonging – Children explore how faith effects the way some Christians live their lives today. They learn about life in the Early Christian community and reflect on the benefits of living in a community with shared beliefs and values, as well as whether it is possible to change to a different faith from the one into which you were born. Children are given time to identify which values and beliefs are important to them as an individual.
